Medicare decide what is deemed a Medical admission. If there is an MBS (Medicare Benefit Schedule) item number for your surgery, it also means that your health fund will cover this theatre fee if you have the correct level of cover.
Some admissions will be both Medical and Cosmetic. For example, you may require a belt lipectomy (360 circumferential lipectomy), but on top of the ancillary liposuction for this procedure you may require additional liposuction.
This liposuction fee will be a cosmetic portion, payable to the hospital on admission. Whilst your belt lipectomy (MBS 30179) may be covered by your PHI. Cosmetic fees are billed by the Hospital every 30 minutes that you are in theatre.
Your PHI will cover the theatre fee, inpatient stay if you need to stay the night, and provide a small rebate for your surgical fee. Medicare will cover 75% of the rebate for the surgical fee, and your PHI will over 25%.
Aside from the surgical fee, Anaesthetists will charge a GAP of roughly $1300 per hour.
Plastic and Reconstructive surgeons in Australia must adhere to the very strict guidelines set out by the Medical Board of Australia and AHPRA. This means that we cannot offer any type of payment plan for our patients.
You can however on your own terms obtain finance to pay for your surgery.
