As we age, our skin undergoes several changes that affect its appearance and function:

  1. Thinning of the Skin Layers: The epidermis (outer layer) and dermis (inner layer) become thinner over time. This thinning reduces the skin’s strength and elasticity, making it more susceptible to damage and bruising.
  2. Decreased Collagen and Elastin Production: Collagen and elastin are essential proteins that provide structure and elasticity to the skin. With age, the production of these proteins’ decline, leading to sagging, wrinkles, and a loss of firmness.
  3. Reduced Fat in the Subcutaneous Layer: The subcutaneous layer, which provides cushioning and insulation, loses fat over time. This loss contributes to a hollowed or sunken appearance, particularly in areas like the cheeks and under the eyes.
  4. Decreased Oil Production: Sebaceous glands produce less oil as we age, leading to drier skin. This reduction can cause the skin to feel rough, itchy, and more prone to irritation.
  5. Slower Skin Regeneration: The skin’s ability to repair itself diminishes with age. Cuts, bruises, and other injuries take longer to heal, increasing the risk of infection and scarring.
  6. Changes in Pigmentation: Melanocytes, the cells responsible for pigment production, decrease in number and function. This change can result in uneven pigmentation, age spots, and a more translucent appearance of the skin.
  7. Increased Fragility: The skin becomes more fragile due to a decrease in the number of nerve endings and a thinning of the dermal-epidermal junction. This fragility makes the skin more susceptible to tears and bruising.

Understanding these age-related changes is crucial for developing effective skincare routines and seeking appropriate treatments to maintain skin health and appearance. Dr Nathan Stewart is a proud stockist of the Is Clinical range. This range has an extensive approach to research and development, combining traditional botanical medicine and advanced scientific formulation.
