DeQuervains Surgery Perth
Dequervains presents with pain at the base of the thumb.
It is typically caused by repetitive activities, such as commencing a new role at work. New mothers are particularly prone to this, due to often awkward positioning of the hand while caring for an infant. Arthritis in the base of the thumb can also often increase inflammation in these tendons.
It often responds well to conservative (non surgical) management. Cornerstone of treatment is steroid injections to help settle inflammation, although it routinely takes several doses, 3 months apart to completely settle.
Why people choose Dequervains surgery:
- Pain is still ongoing following non-surgical treatments (such as steroid injections or splints)
- Symptoms are restricting normal daily activities
- Improve function of the thumb or fingers
Dr Stewart will work closely with you to develop a surgical plan and treatment options to offer you life changing relief from your symptoms. To book an appointment or to find out more, contact our team today.
Taking care of yourself after surgery
The hands are highly pain-sensitive, and pain may be severe enough to require analgesics. To reduce movements and allow the repairs to hold firmly, you may need to wear a splint. Rehabilitation is also necessary to achieve maximal use of your hands after the procedure.
Success rates depend on the type of deformity, and complete recovery may take months to years.
